About the Role The Editorial Team Leader is responsible for supervising the work of Editorial Assistants and other junior editorial staff. They will deliver timely, high-quality administrative, data, and project work within Research Editorial, supporting both the Content Strategy and Content Development teams. The Editorial Team Leader will manage a system for allocating work that is fair, equitable, and efficient, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of assigned tasks and project work by all team members. They will create a positive environment for their team members and ensure there are opportunities to gain a broad understanding of the editorial work in book and online publishing.

Key Accountabilities

  1. Manage and support a team of editorial support staff that provides administrative, data, and project support to the Research Editorial group.
  2. Develop and oversee a system for allocating people/project assignments and for monitoring progress on those support projects. Set clear team goals and provide an equitable, transparent, and fair balance of work across the team. Set deadlines for all editorial-support tasks to be completed, monitor team performance, and report on metrics.
  3. Understand and fulfill the training needs of all team members. Complete skills matrices and provide training and coaching as required, so that all members of the team can learn, develop their skills, and position themselves for career opportunities at OUP.
  4. Represent support-team members in meetings with the Heads of Acquisitions, Heads of Content Development, and Head of Editorial Operations, seeking feedback, making suggestions for changes and improvements, and resolving any issues or conflicts.
  5. Oversee the editorial support team’s workflows (including for payments, gratis, and contracts), ensuring that processes are efficient, work is accurate, and the team engages with relevant systems effectively.
  6. Collaborate to recruit new team members, undertake performance appraisals, manage performance, and deal with team- or individual-discipline issues. Provide orientation for new starters and ensure that they are welcomed and onboarded effectively.
  7. Oversee support-team procedures for setting up new-project records and maintenance of content and project data in all relevant systems. Set and maintain standards for what data needs entering into which system at each stage of a project, and ensure support team members understand data-capture and data-maintenance best practices.
  8. Optimize project data to support discovery and use of published content and to reduce errors in published content and editorial metadata. Develop and coordinate NBAs and support team members doing this work. Support team members working on their own first-edition projects and ensure that titles are handed over in a timely and accurate manner. Be the first escalation point for any issues with authors and editors and manage these relationships appropriately.
  9. Support systems- and process-improvement initiatives that impact the editorial support teams’ work, encouraging and facilitating support-team members’ participation in the initiatives.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience of leading a team, and/or coaching and training others
  • Some knowledge of cross-format publishing and of the editorial function in an academic environment
  • Excellent organizational, project-management, and time-management skills
  • Some experience supporting process-improvement implementation and/or managing change across a team
  • Ability to be adaptable and positive in the face of change
  • Experience communicating effectively with a wide range of people in a variety of contexts
